Gushiya

Gushiya is a wonderful, small sushi restaurant that we regularly eat at and order from. Seona and her husband are wonderful hosts, and we’ve greatly enjoyed the company and food they make.

Because we were such huge fans of this local restaurant in Torrance, we decided to create a spec-ad-esque menu design for them.

Through one of our conversations, we’d found out that they had a hard time managing the design and printing of their menu (I’m sure there aren’t many itamae’s who also have a mastery of InDesign).

Gushiya has a fairly large menu covering appetizers, sushi, bentos, poke, and a kid’s menu, so space management was a key design challenge to overcome.

Balancing proximity and readability became the key struggle for the whole menu design. Images needed to be large enough for customers to see what they would be ordering, but sized appropriately to allow us to group and fit the sections onto their own pages.

After a few iterations and multiple rounds of feedback, we were able to land on this final design. It captures Gushiya’s tasteful rolls and presents their food in a new and exciting manner.
